The home of renowned stone masons becomes a luxury ski destination

A traditional stone quarrying town for centuries Samoens has prospered through the quarrying of limestone from the ideal sites around the area, buildings are traditionally more stone clad than the timber that dominates many mountain towns. So Samoes has it’s own distinctive appearance & style which has earned it the distinguished title of a “ville fleurie” one of the most beautiful towns in France. Local produce is available in abundance with meats, cheeses & the preserves and spirits of the regional mountain tradition. Samoens boasts botanical gardens created in 1906, under snow in winter but incredible in spring or summer with over 5000 plants. You’re not able to ski back to the town but you can ski to Morillon & grab a 10 minute bus ride back to the resort. The Grand Massif region reaches up to 2500m making it an enormous & snow sure ski area boasting the popular resorts of Morillon, Flaine, Sixt Fer a Cheval in addition to the wonderful Samoens. There’s a lovely 14km Les Cascades blue run and plenty for more advanced skiers including the Gers Bowl at steep descent of mixed powder & challenging off piste.
