Chalet Lac de Vonnes, Chatel, Portes du Soleil
Chatel is a vibrant village maintaining its French charm and character of a working village. It is by far one of the most friendliest resorts attracting many nationalities and culture. The ski area is a gem and a well kept secret, with ease of access to many other resorts within the Portes du Soleil
Chatel is approx. 90mins from Geneva airport, an unassuming, yet vibrant and charming resort with access to a major ski area of 650kms of piste.

Chatel is a beautiful village which has no major British tour operaters being here. Therefore, the standard of beautiful well run chalets are in abundance.

The village itself has many bars and restaurants and creates a great atmosphere, but not overly boistrous and loud. It is not a Club 18/30 environment.

The Super Chatel ski area is accessible from the center of the village and comprises of superb runs for beginners and low intermediate, and because you are high up on the mountain reached by the quick Super Telecabine, it is a quick way for the novice skier to feel part of the great atmosphere skiing creates. Behind Super Chatel and easily accessible by all level of skiiers, is the Swiss resort of Morgins which you can ski down to and then further into Switzerland through to Les Crosets and Champery, coming back into the Linderet Valley and France again. The Super Chatel area is not a great area for Boarders as some flat spots and buttons which dont seemt to be appreciated. To summarise Super Chatel, it is a great area for people with young families wishing for them to progress.

With plans next year to start the link between Super Chatel and Linga, the ski area achillie heel of Chatel being linked by a bus to Linga will be resolved.

Linga is an area used for major ski competitions as it is challenging and steep. This is an excellent run from top to bottom and will certainly get the thighs burning. The opportunity for off piste in this area is sublime.... A must is to visit the Ferme de Piste restaurant for the quaintness of the place just below the summit of the Linga telecabine on the left going down.

At the the top of Linga 2 chairlift, drop down into major intermediate ski heaven with opportunity for great pistes and an area naturally but perfectly crafted for off piste learning and bags of fun! The lifts are all modern and speedy which get you around I personally believe the best are of the Portes du Soleil! Never massively busy like other resorts in the PDS being the main reason, oh and for me, the amount of great off piste opportunity. The restaurants though are not the best and for this I would venture into the Plaine Dranse or Pre Le Joux area.

Pre Le Joux is a major departure point from Chatel approximately 7mins drive from the center. It is very well serviced by free buses, but most Catered Chalet owners do free in resort transfers, drop off and pick up, if necessary to go here.

At the the top of Pre Le Joux, join onto the Rochasson lift and over into the Linderet valley then Avoriaz.

The ski area is phenominal and can offer something for every ability. What is also very amazing about the area is the snow record. People comment on Chatel not being a high resort, but due to it being mostly pasture land, we need only approx. 30-40cm fo snow for it to be bashed unlike some higher/major resorts which need more because they are so craggy and rocky. Also being variable in heights means when the weather is not brilliant in one area, you can find other areas to ski in. You have the height and the alpine trees to some amazing off piste places. This year already we have over 1 meter 50cm of snow on the piste and it is only 7 Dec 08 !
