Serre Chevalier is the name given to a cluster of villages in the French Alps. There are four main settlements, Briancon, the highest-altitude town in France, and the three villages of Le Monetier, Villeneuve and Chatemerle, as well as nine smaller settlements. Briancon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is indisputably the jewel in Serre Chavalier's crown. The ski area covers 1200-2735m, and includes 250km served by 62 lifts. The north-facing slopes keep their snow well (snow is also kept shaded by a tree-line higher than is usual in the Alps) but 75% of the region is covered by snow guns to give snow-sure conditions. An added bonus is that the 6 day Serre Chavalier pass includes a day's skiing in Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez and Montgenevre, giving you an enormous area to get stuck into. Read more...

Links between the four main settlements make skiing the region easy regardless of the area you base yourself in. Beginners are able to buy cheap day passes that give access to nursery runs, making the resort a great place for mixed ability groups and families with young children. More experienced skiers can choose from an array of wide reds and blues, but experts are likely to get most excited by the ungroomed 'brut de niege' blacks and the wider off-piste opportunities. Snowboarders have a number of snowparks to choose from as well as the abundance of naturally occurring obstacles near to pistes. There are also specialist schools for those looking to learn how to snowboard in Serre Chevalier. Cross country skiers can tackle the 35km of trails along the valley floor.
