Vars is the name give to the group of villages that span the length of the Route des Grandes Alpes, although the main settlement is the Vars-les-Claux, situated at 1850m. The resort is purpose-built, but is found in a pretty wooded area so its convenient set up does not come at the cost of beauty. Vars and nearby Risoul together share La Foret Blanche ski area, which is located at 1660-2750m, with 185km of piste served by 50 lifts. Once in Vars, you'll find that the ski area rises up on both sides of the valley. On the one side is the Peynier skiing area, whilst on the other is the bowl linked to Risoul. Beginners and intermediates are best provided for in terms of the pistes, and beginners are spoilt with a number of free lifts at resort-level that rise to the top of gentle nursery slopes. Intermediate skiers in Vars face a great number of reds and blues (which dominate the offering) both immediately around Peynier and on the Risoul side. However, the most experienced skiers do have some black runs to go at (bear in mind that the resort has hosted many speed skiing competitions!), including a devilish run down to the resort, and there are fantastic off-piste opportunities in the bowl, especially if there's fresh powder. Snowboarders have 6 freestyle snowparks to have a crack at, and will be equally keen on off-piste tracks with fresh powder. Cross-country skiers can explore 10km of trails in La Foret Blanche.

Self-catered chalets and apartments in Vars are one part of a wide range of accommodation on offer

The types of accommodation in Vars that predominate depends on which of the settlements you're in, but you can expect a mix of traditional style wood-clad chalets and more functional apartment blocks. Self-catered chalets in Vars feature highly, and provide you with the opportunity to have a more low cost skiing or snowboarding experience in Vars, or to take advantage of the resort's impressive range of restaurants. However, there are some great catered chalets in Vars but they take a little looking for. Because Vars is purpose-built, much of the accommodation is ski-in/ski-out, adding to the ease of your holiday, making the resort particularly appealing for mixed ability groups and families.
