French ski resort Tignes is comprised of a number of distinct places: Le Rosset and Le Bec-Rouge make up Tignes-le-Lac, and this together with Les Almes and Le Lavachet makes up Tignes 2100 (follow this link for more on the background and history of Tignes). At lower altitude, there is Tignes-les-Boisses (Tignes 1800) and Tignes-les-Brevieres. The main resort Tignes 2100 is a high-altitude (unsurprisingly located at 2100m) resort, which has a skiing area that peaks at 3455m, offering 150km of piste served by 47 lifts. However, Tignes is situated in the Espace Killy skiing area, which includes Val d'Isere and includes 300km of piste, served by 79 lifts and kept in great condition by 974 snow guns. Read more...
Getting to the slopes from the resort is made easy by a range of options including 7 chairs, 1 cable car and a funicular railway, which climbs 3000m to Le Grande Motte glacier in 7 minutes. Experienced skiers will have a field-day when they get on the snow, as ungroomed but avalanche controlled 'naturides' pose a challenge, as does the surrounding off-piste. Less experienced skiers are sure to be pleased by the range of reds and blues on offer, kept in great condition by the high-altitude, glacier and snow guns. For those looking to learn, free lifts serve nursery runs, and there are a range of ski school options available. Snowboarders are confronted by one of the best snowboarding propositions in the world, with off-piste, wide, rolling runs, and specialist ski schools. For cross-country skiers, there are over 40km of trails to explore. Great things about skiing or snowboarding in Tignes:
There are so many accommodation options in Tignes, and you can choose from Tignes 2100, Tignes 1800 (planned to open for the 2014/15 season), and Tignes-les-Brevieres. Historically, Tignes 2100 has had a largely functional feel to it, although in recent years development has been along the lines of more attractive, traditional chalets and apartments. If you want small-town charm, then consider Tignes-les-Brevieres. Given all this choice, it's not surprising that you'll find a whole of host of options, ranging from catered wood-clad chalets for a luxurious holiday experiencing including pools, saunas and jacuzzis, to self-catered apartments.
